Album Review: good kid, m.A.A.d city

Introduction

Good kid, m.A.A.d city is the amazing sophomore album from Grammy award winning artist Kendrick Lamar. The project is one of the best rap albums of the past decade, period.

Summary

The album is a masterpiece, containing stories of growing up in Compton in an era where artists like Tupac and Biggie were witnessed in their prime and where Hip-Hop as a genre went through some of its biggest changes yet. The project shows Kendrick’s past, laid over perfect west coast beats and flawless flows.

Album Review: I Decided

Introduction

Big Sean has always lacked something as an artist in my opinion. There is very little that stands out about himself as an image, figure, lyricist or musician to myself.

Summary

His newest album sounds like another addition to the repetitive discography that he has managed to build thus far. Sean is keen to constantly remind listeners of his improvements as a rapper, often putting down his past work, an interesting take to have on so much of his own music. This often comes across not as progressive, but as an insecurity within himself.

Album Review: B4.DA.$$

Introduction

Created at the age of eighteen and released at 21, ‘B4.DA.$$‘ is the Brooklyn rapper’s (Joey Bada$$) debut album. With tones of his predecessors shown throughout the project this is an album that plays like you’ve heard it a hundred times thanks to his amazing lyricism and classic beats. The album is a key part of the hip-hop genre today, helping tie it to its roots for when other artists sometimes perhaps stray too far from what the genre was built on.

Album Review: We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service

Introduction

The legendary hip-hop outfit: A Tribe Called Quest has recently returned with a new project. The release is outstanding. Retaining the group’s classic sound while keeping current to issues affecting the world today. The group pieces together a near perfect rap album, waving farewell to fans in an incredibly commendable fashion.

Summary

The project causes the listener to forget their break of nearly 20 years without a release, by mentioning some of the most poetic, popular and lyrical artists of the new generation including the likes of J. Cole and Joey Bada$$. Despite this, older artists such as Busta Rhymes and Consequence are still major players throughout the albums production. The continuation of the groups classic sound has proved its incredible ability to stay relevant and essential to the genre, as well as allowing the group to retire, proud of their gigantic contribution. Instead of changing their sound in a desperate attempt to stay relevant, the group sounds proud, confident and nostalgic on ‘We Got It From Here’.
